WILLIAMSTOWN, NJ.- On Wednesday, following an investigation, a 44-year-old Williamstown, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged with distributing and possessing digital images and video files depicting the sexual exploitation and abuse of children.
According to Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns, Michael S. Schmitt, 44, of Williamstown, New Jersey, has been formally charged with one count of second-degree Distribution of Child Pornography; and one count of third-degree Possession of Child Pornography.
Schmitt Was Arrested At His Home On Wednesday
Schmitt was taken into custody at his Williamstown home on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. He was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Salem County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings in Gloucester County Superior Court in Woodbury, New Jersey.
The charges stem from an investigation that began when Detectives of the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crimes Unit received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding an individual in the Gloucester County, New Jersey area, who was utilizing a Social Media platform to view, download, and distribute media files depicting child pornography.
On July 17, 2025, during the course of the investigation, Detectives of the Gloucester County High Tech Crimes Unit executed a court-authorized search warrant at Schmitt’s Williamstown residence. During the search, Detectives seized multiple electronic devices. A subsequent forensic examination of the devices uncovered digital images and video files depicting the sexual exploitation of children, as well as evidence that the devices were being utilized to access the Social Media account identified in the original CyberTip.
If convicted at trial, Schmitt faces a maximum penalty of ten years in New Jersey State Prison, parole supervision for life, and will be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law registration requirements.
