Police Charge Man In Saturday Night Northeast, D.C. Attempted Carjacking

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Saturday, a 51-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with an attempted strongarm carjacking that occurred on Saturday evening in Northeast, D.C.

     According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at around 6:00 p.m., members of the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a carjacking on the 2000 Block of West Virginia Avenue in Northeast, D.C.

Upon Arrival, Police Officers Find Suspect Being Detained

     Upon arrival, Police Officers were informed by the victim that while they were seated in their parked car on West Virginia Avenue, a suspect opened the driver’s side door, assaulted them, pulled them out of the vehicle, and jumped into the driver’s seat. During the assault, two nearby witnesses ran to the car and pulled the suspect out of the victim’s vehicle and held him until the Police Officers arrived on the scene. The owner of the car suffered minor injuries during the assault.

     Accordingly, the suspect, identified as John Gainey, 51, of Northeast, D.C., was taken into custody and formally charged with Attempted Unarmed Carjacking. He was processed on the charge and remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
