Maryland Man Fatally Gunned Down Sunday Afternoon In Southeast, D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC.- The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting death of an Oxon Hill, Maryland, man who was fatally gunned down Sunday afternoon in Southeast, D.C.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Sunday, September 7, 2025, just minutes after 3:00 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District responded to reports and sounds of gunfire on the 2600 Block of Birney Place in Southeast, D.C.
Police Officers Find Maryland Man Shot On The Street
Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Najii Mercer, 20, of Oxon Hill, Maryland, lying on the ground, suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. Mr. Mercer was immediately transported by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services to a nearby hospital, where, despite life-saving efforts, Mr. Mercer succumbed to his injury and was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. No arrests have been made as Detectives continue the search for the gunman and a motive for the shooting.
