Upper Marlboro Man Charged In Southeast, D.C. Fatal Shooting

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Wednesday, following an investigation, a 31-year-old Upper Marlboro, Maryland, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with fatally gunning down a 39-year-old Baltimore, Maryland, man earlier this year in Southeast, D.C.

     According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, at around 11:00 a.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Seventh District responded to multiple reports of a shooting on the 3000 Block of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue in Southeast, D.C.

Police Officers Find Baltimore Man Shot Dead On The Street

     Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Derrick Howard, 39, of Baltimore, Maryland, unresponsive, on the ground, having succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound. Mr. Howard was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene by DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

During The Investigation, Detectives Identify The Suspect

     During the ensuing investigation, and based on witness accounts and video surveillance footage, Detectives were able to identify the shooter as Andre Townsend, 31, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, and a DC Superior Court warrant was issued for his arrest. On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Townsend was located and taken into custody and formally charged with one count of second-degree Murder While Armed and related Weapons Offenses.

     Townsend was processed on the charges and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia.
