Jersey City School Teacher Found Guilty Of Child Sex Crimes Against A Student

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- Last Thursday, following a trial in Hudson County Superior Court, a 72-year-old Hicksville, New York, man and former Jersey City, New Jersey, public magnet middle and high school teacher was convicted in connection with sex crimes involving a preteen student.

     According to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, on Thursday, September 18, 2025, following a multi-week trial, before Superior Court Judge Nesle Rodriguez, a jury found Apparao Sunkara, 72, of Hicksville, New York, guilty of second-degree Sexual Assault by Contact; second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child; and second-degree Official Misconduct. 

Judge Rodriguez Schedules Sunkara To Be Senteced In December

     Following the jury returning their findings of guilt, Judge Rodriguez accepted the verdict and scheduled sentencing for Friday, December 12, 2025. At that time, Sunkara faces up to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison on each of the charges. In addition to a term of imprisonment, Sunkara will be subject to parole supervision for life and be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law restraints.

     According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the conviction stems from an investigation that uncovered that on various dates beginning in September 2019 and lasting through January 2020, Sunkara engaged in prohibited sexual acts with a 12-year-old female student while employed as a teacher at the Infinity Institute, located in the Greenville section of Jersey City, New Jersey.
