Jersey City Man Sentenced For The 2023 Shooting Death Of His Wife

JERSEY CITY, NJ.- A 41-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey, man will be spending the next two and a half decades in New Jersey State Prison after being sentenced on Thursday for the fatal shooting of his 35-year-old wife inside their Jersey City, New Jersey, apartment back in January 2023.

     According to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Lucus Cooper, 41, of Jersey City, New Jersey, appeared in Hudson County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Mitzy Galis-Menendez to 25 years in State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which will require Cooper to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.

Cooper Previously Pleaded Guilty In The Shooting Death Of His Wife

     Cooper previously appeared in Hudson County Superior Court and pleaded guilty before Judge Galis-Menendez to one count of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter in connection with fatally shooting Temara King, 35, which occurred in the morning hours of January 24, 2023.

As Previously Reported In January 2023

     As previously reported, on January 24, 2023, just shortly after 7:00 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of gunfire on the third floor of an apartment building, located at 340 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City. Upon arrival, Police Officers located a woman, later identified as Temara King, 35, of Jersey City, New Jersey, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Ms. Temara was transported to Jersey City Medical Center, where, despite life-saving efforts, Ms. King succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased just shortly over an hour later.
