Police Charge Elderly Man In Southeast Assault Of His Neighbor

WASHINGTON, DC.- Last Friday, a 74-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and detained after being charged in connection with allegedly threatening to shoot his neighbor and her dog earlier that morning in Southeast, D.C.
According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Friday, October 10, 2025, just shortly before 8:00 a.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting an alleged confrontation involving a gun between two individuals on the 3400 Block of 23rd Street in Southeast, D.C.
Upon arrival, Police Officers encountered a female victim who informed them that while she was walking her dog on 23rd Street, she was approached by her neighbor, identified as Robert Hammond, 74, of Southeast, D.C., who pointed a BB gun at her and threatened to shoot both her and her dog. Hammond then went inside his residence, retrieved a machete, and continued to threaten her.
During The Arrest, Police Officers Recover BB Gun And Machete
During the initial investigation, Responding Police Officers recovered the BB gun and arrested Hammond at the scene. During his arrest, Police Officers found Hammond to be in possession of the machete.
   Based on the initial investigation, Hammond was formally charged with one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon; Possession of a Prohibited Weapon; Threats to Kidnap or Injury; and Possession of an Unregistered Firearm. Hammond was processed on the charges and was detained pending his first appearance in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
