Speaker Johnson Accuses Democrats Of Bowing To “Radical Marxists” As Federal Workers Miss Paychecks, SNAP Aid Nears Cutoff, & Air Travel Disruptions Mount

WASHINGTON, DC.- On the 27th day of the ongoing federal shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) delivered a sharp-edged press conference Monday morning, accusing Senate Democrats of “holding the American people hostage” by blocking every attempt to reopen the government.

“Since October 1, Senate Democrats have voted twelve times to block our clean continuing resolution,” Johnson said. “Republicans have been ready from day one to keep the government open. The Democrats are the ones voting over and over to keep it closed.”

Johnson said the impact of the deadlock is reaching across the country. “Nearly 1.4 million federal employees have already missed a paycheck,” he warned. “Small businesses that depend on federal contracts are tightening their belts, and families are feeling the pain. SNAP food assistance will cease this Friday if Democrats don’t act.”

He further cited growing pressure on transportation systems, referencing a weekend ground stop at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) due to staffing shortages. “Air traffic delays are piling up,” he said. “American lives are being put in danger as Democrats put politics ahead of people.”

The Speaker also turned to what he described as the ideological transformation of the Democratic Party:

“What we are witnessing is truly the end of the Democratic Party as we have known it. The candidate that they have endorsed, Zohran Mamdani, is somebody who has sympathized with Hamas, openly embraced antisemitic language, and called to ‘seize the means of production’ because he is a Marxist. And the Democrat leader in the House, Hakeem Jeffries, just gave him his full blessing. What’s shocking is that Jeffries and House Democrats are going to co-own whatever happens now.”

Johnson argued that Democrats have become “beholden to the radical Marxist faction” of their party, saying their refusal to advance a clean funding bill is “causing real suffering.”

“There’s no room left for centrists or moderates,” he added. “It’s all ideology now, and Americans are paying the price.”

Despite the shutdown, Johnson emphasized that House Republicans are still legislating:

“We are continuing our work on conservative priorities,” he said. “Committees are pressing forward on healthcare reforms to expand access, lower costs, and increase transparency, because we can’t allow this shutdown, created by Senate Democrats, to halt our commitment to deliver for the American people.”

Johnson closed with a challenge to the Senate:

“House Republicans have done our job. We’ve passed a clean bill twelve times. It’s the Senate Democrats who are blocking it and prolonging this shutdown. The solution is on their desks; they just have to vote yes.”

Call it what you will, gridlock, brinkmanship, or a battle for America’s direction, but it’s clear Republicans are not about to bow down to the Democrats’ endless appetite for more spending. With both sides dug in and no compromise in sight, Washington is staring down the barrel of a potentially long and punishing shutdown. The Speaker’s defiant tone made one thing unmistakable: House Republicans intend to stand their ground, no matter how long it takes, to stop what they call “reckless, inflation-driving excess” from Senate Democrats.
