BAYONNE, NJ.- A 37-year-old Bayonne, New Jersey, man who fled to Colombia to avoid prosecution will be spending the next three decades in New Jersey State Prison after being sentenced on Wednesday for the 2020 brutal beating death of a 40-year-old Bayonne, New Jersey, mother.

According to Acting Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Erick Acosta, 37, formerly of Bayonne, New Jersey, appeared in Hudson County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Nesle A. Rodriguez to 30 years in State Prison, after previously pleading guilty to Aggravated Manslaughter in the October 2020, death of Crystal Ojeda, 40, of Bayonne, New Jersey.

Sentence Stems From Guilty Plea For The 2020 Beating Death

The guilty plea and Wednesday’s sentence stem from an investigation that began on October 9, 2020, when, shortly before 1:00 p.m., members of the Bayonne Police Department responded to a request to perform a welfare check at an apartment located at 30 Lord Avenue in the City of Bayonne.

Upon arrival, Police Officers discovered the lifeless body of Crystal Ojeda, 40, of Bayonne, having succumbed to visible trauma. Ms. Ojeda was pronounced deceased at the scene shortly before 2:00 p.m. A subsequent autopsy performed by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the Cause of Death to be Blunt Force Trauma to the Head and Body, and the Manner of Death to be Homicide.

Acosta Fled To Colombia Shortly After Committing The Murder

During the investigation, Detectives of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Bayonne Police Department were able to develop information linking Acosta to the Murder of Ms. Ojeda, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Detectives later learned that Acosta had fled to Colombia to avoid arrest and prosecution.

Acosta was later apprehended with the help of Colombian law enforcement and extradited back to the United States.
