WASHINGTON, DC.- On Sunday, a 23-year-old Washington, D.C., man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with assaulting and carjacking a rideshare driver late Saturday night in Southwest, D.C.

According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, on Saturday, December 13, 2025, just minutes after 10:15 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call from Special Metropolitan Police Officers requesting assistance regarding an assault and attempted carjacking on the 4600 Block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southeast, D.C.

Upon arrival, Police Officers were informed by Special Police Officers and the victim, a rideshare driver, picked up the suspect, identified as Terrell Medlay, 23, of Northwest, D.C. During the ride, Medlay and the victim got into a verbal disagreement when the suspect requested an additional stop.

The disagreement quickly escalated, and Medlay began assaulting the victim as the victim pulled the vehicle over. Medlay then pulled the victim out of the car and demanded the vehicle’s keys. Three Special Police Officers who were in the immediate area intervened and detained Medlay until Police Officers arrived.

Charges Filed Early Sunday Morning

Accordingly, Police Officers took Medlay into custody and charged him early Sunday morning, December 14, 2025, with one count of Unarmed Carjacking; and one count of Felony Strangulation. Medlay was processed on the charges and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
