PLAINFIELD, NJ.- Last Thursday, a 53-year-old Plainfield, New Jersey, man learned he will be spending at least 25 years and up to life in New Jersey State Prison when sentenced in March, after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a young child back in the summer of 2023.

According to Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, following a two-week trial in Union County Superior Court before Superior Court Judge Regina Caulfield, a jury deliberated for less than a half-day before convicting Jose Miranda, 53, formally of Plainfield, New Jersey, on multiple crimes involving the sexual assault of a child under the age of thirteen.

The jury found Miranda guilty of first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault; second-degree Sexual Assault; and third-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Following the jury returning their findings of guilt, Judge Caulfield accepted the verdict and scheduled sentencing for March 13, 2026. At that time, Miranda faces a mandatory minimum of 25 years and up to life in New Jersey State Prison pursuant to the Jessica Lundsford Act, which mandates higher terms of imprisonment for crimes committed on victims under the age of 13.

According to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Caroline R. Lawlor, who prosecuted the case, on August 13, 2023, Miranda committed an act of sexual penetration on a young child. The child’s parents reported the incident to the Plainfield Police Department and cooperated with Detective Claudia Diez and other Detectives of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, who led the investigation. Miranda was taken into custody the following day and has been lodged in the Essex County Correctional Facility since his arrest.
