NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ.- On Tuesday, a 16-year-old Mays Landing, New Jersey, boy was taken into custody and detained after being charged in connection with fatally gunning down a 16-year-old New Brunswick, New Jersey, girl that occurred earlier that afternoon in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, just shortly before 2:30 p.m., members of the New Brunswick Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting gunfire at a residence located on Lawrence Street, in the City of New Brunswick.

Upon arrival, Responding Police Officers discovered a 16-year-old New Brunswick, New Jersey, girl, having sustained a life-threatening gunshot wound. The girl was immediately transported by Emergency Medical Services to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injury and was subsequently pronounced deceased a short time later.

During the initial investigation, Police Officers detained the 16-year-old Mays Landing, New Jersey boy.

Following a subsequent investigation, Detective Brandt Gregus of the New Brunswick Police Department and Detective Stephanie Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the two knew each other prior to the shooting, and that the teenage boy shot the girl, resulting in her death.

Accordingly, the teenager was charged with acts of juvenile delinquency of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose. The teen was processed on the charges, and, according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office, as of Wednesday, he remains in Police custody pending his First Appearance in the Middlesex County Superior Court Family Law Division.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with additional information regarding this investigation is urged to contact Detective Gregus of the New Brunswick Police Department at (732) 745-5217 or Detective Redline of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3316.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: As in adult criminal cases, the charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and a juvenile defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
