PALM BEACH, FL.- Federal authorities have identified the man fatally shot early Sunday morning outside President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property after, officials say, he breached a secured “inner perimeter” and raised a shotgun toward law enforcement during a confrontation near the club’s north gate.

     The individual was identified as Austin Tucker Martin, 21, from Moore County, North Carolina. Multiple outlets reported ties to the community of Cameron, North Carolina.

Incident Timeline And Law Enforcement Response;

According to statements and briefings summarized by national and local reporting, the sequence of events unfolded at approximately 1:30 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday, February 22, 2026, when Mar-a-Lago security detected a person inside a restricted area of the property.

     Officials said Martin was carrying a shotgun and a fuel canister when he was confronted by U.S. Secret Service personnel alongside a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities stated Martin was ordered to drop both items; he lowered or dropped the fuel canister, but then raised the shotgun into a shooting position, prompting the agents and deputy to open fire.

     Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. No Secret Service personnel or local deputies were injured during the encounter.

President Not Present At Mar-a-Lago;

     Officials confirmed President Donald Trump was not at Mar-a-Lago at the time of the shooting. National reporting indicated that the President was in Washington, D.C., and noted that both the President and the First Lady were at the White House over the weekend.

Travel From North Carolina And Missing Person Report;

     Investigators believe Martin traveled from North Carolina to Florida shortly before the incident. Reporting indicates he had been reported missing by family members prior to the fatal confrontation.

     Local coverage cited law enforcement officials stating Martin acquired the shotgun during his travel south, with the firearm’s original box later recovered from his vehicle. Authorities further stated Martin allegedly accessed the property through the north gate, reportedly entering as another vehicle exited the secured area.

Ongoing Investigation And Administrative Review;

     The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation in coordination with the U.S. Secret Service and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

     Consistent with standard post-incident protocol, Secret Service personnel involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

     While investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive, reports published Monday stated that Martin had become intensely focused on the Jeffrey Epstein case and related materials, citing accounts from co-workers and a message reportedly obtained by a celebrity news outlet.

     Federal officials and major news organizations emphasized that no official determination has been made regarding Martin’s intent or whether his actions were politically or ideologically motivated.

Security Context;

     The shooting occurred at a property that functions both as a private club and a high-profile location associated with the sitting president. Officials credited the coordinated response between federal agents and local deputies with preventing the intruder from advancing further into the secured perimeter.
