Former Millville Resident Sentenced To 75 Years After Jury Convictions On Multiple Counts Involving Sexual Assaults Of Two Young Children

MILLVILLE, NJ.- A former Millville man convicted of repeatedly sexually assaulting two young children over several years has been sentenced to what amounts to a life term in prison, a punishment that prosecutors say reflects both the severity and duration of the crimes.

     Brian Scherfel, 34, previously of Millville, New Jersey, was sentenced on Thursday, February 19, 2026, to an aggregate term of 75 years in New Jersey State Prison, with 67.5 years of parole ineligibility, following his conviction on 13 felony counts related to the sexual abuse of two juvenile victims.

     Given the length of the sentence, Scherfel will be approximately 101 years old in 2093 before he becomes eligible for parole, making it highly unlikely he will ever be released from custody.

Jury Convictions On Thirteen Counts;

     On August 28, 2025, a Cumberland County jury returned guilty verdicts against Scherfel on thirteen counts, including:

  • First-Degree Aggravated Sexual Assault (multiple counts)
  • Second-Degree Sexual Assault (multiple counts)
  • Third-Degree Aggravated Criminal Sexual Contact
  • Fourth-Degree Criminal Sexual Contact
  • Second-Degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child (multiple counts)

     The convictions spanned a wide range of serious sexual offenses, reflecting repeated and escalating conduct over several years.

Details of the Abuse;

     During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing that Scherfel sexually and physically assaulted two juvenile females on numerous occasions.

     According to the evidence:

  • One victim was assaulted repeatedly between 2017 and 2022, beginning when the child was eight years old and continuing until she was thirteen years old.
  • The second victim was sexually assaulted on varying dates in 2016, when she was six years old.

     The assaults occurred in Millville, New Jersey, and involved acts that prosecutors described as predatory, sustained, and profoundly damaging to the victims.

Sentencing And Post-Release Conditions;

     At Thursday’s sentencing hearing, Niki Arbittier, J.S.C., imposed the 75-year sentence after considering the jury’s verdicts, the statutory sentencing factors, and the long-term harm caused to the victims.

     In addition to the prison term, Scherfel will be subject to Megan’s Law registration and Parole Supervision for Life should he ever be released. Those conditions would include strict monitoring, reporting requirements, and limitations on residence, employment, and contact with minors.

Prosecution Team;

     The case was prosecuted by Erin McGlynn and Caitlin Flynn, Assistant Prosecutors with the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, who presented the evidence during the trial and argued for a lengthy sentence at the conclusion of the case.
