Police Identify 53-year-Old Naturalized U.S. Citizen As Suspect; FBI Examining “Indicators” But Says Motive Not Yet Determined

Sunday, March 1, 2026, 2:00 P.M. ET. 4 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

AUSTIN, TX.- Three people are dead, including the alleged gunman, and at least 14 others were injured after an early Sunday morning mass shooting outside a popular West Sixth Street bar, prompting a large-scale law-enforcement response and a parallel federal investigation amid what federal authorities described as apparent “indicators” that could suggest a nexus to terrorism.

     Police Officers with the Austin Police Department said emergency calls began flooding dispatch just before 2:00 a.m., reporting a man firing shots near Buford’s Bar in the city’s West Sixth entertainment corridor.

     Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services confirmed the first call was logged at 1:59 a.m., with first responders arriving in under a minute, a rapid response officials said likely prevented additional fatalities in a densely crowded nightlife district.

Suspect Identified;

     Authorities identified the suspected gunman as a 53-year-old American citizen who was naturalized after emigrating from Senegal. Officials stated he was wearing a sweatshirt bearing the words “Property of Allah” and a T-shirt displaying the flag of Iran at the time of the shooting.

     As of Sunday afternoon, authorities had not publicly released his name, pending formal notification procedures and further investigative steps.

     Law enforcement officials emphasized that clothing and background details are part of the ongoing investigation and that no official determination regarding motive has been made.

What Authorities Say Happened;

     At a news briefing, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis described a fast-moving and chaotic attack that began from a vehicle before unfolding on foot in the crowded corridor.

     According to police, the suspect drove near the bar district, opened fire from his vehicle, then exited and continued shooting at pedestrians along the sidewalk and patio areas.

     Responding officers confronted the suspect within minutes. Police said officers then shot and killed him at the scene. No additional suspects have been identified.

Victims And Injuries;

     Emergency officials reported that 17 individuals required medical attention, with three fatalities, including the suspect. Fourteen victims were transported to area hospitals, and authorities said three remained in critical condition as of Sunday.

     The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending family notifications.

FBI Assistance And “Indicators” Cited;

     The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed it is assisting local authorities through its Joint Terrorism Task Force.

     Alex Doran, identified as the acting agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio field office, said investigators have identified certain “indicators” associated with the suspect and materials recovered from his vehicle. However, he cautioned that it is too early to determine whether the attack meets the federal definition of terrorism.

     Federal authorities stressed that investigators are examining all digital evidence, communications, travel history, and possible affiliations before drawing conclusions about motive.

Scene Response And Ongoing Investigation;

     Mayor Kirk Watson praised the speed of the coordinated response involving local police, EMS, and federal authorities, noting that the West Sixth district is typically packed with weekend crowds at closing time.

     Investigators continued processing the crime scene throughout Sunday, collecting ballistic evidence, reviewing surveillance footage, and interviewing witnesses.

     Authorities urged residents to avoid the immediate area while investigative work continues.

A Familiar Corridor, An Unprecedented Morning;

     West Sixth Street in Austin is one of the city’s most heavily trafficked nightlife districts, drawing thousands of patrons on weekend evenings.

     The shooting unfolded as bars were preparing to close, with rideshare pickups and heavy pedestrian movement contributing to the density of the crowd when the attack began.

     Officials reiterated that while certain personal and symbolic elements associated with the suspect are under review, no final conclusions about the suspect’s ideological motivation have been announced.

Editor’s Note;

This report was written by Art Fletcher, Executive Editor, and is based on official statements from the Austin Police Department, Austin-Travis County EMS, city officials, and the FBI as of March 1, 2026. Authorities have confirmed the suspect’s age, citizenship status, and clothing details, but have not yet released his name or formally determined motive. The FBI has stated that while there are “indicators” under examination, it is premature to classify the attack as terrorism.
