Ocean County Authorities Say Sunday Night Gunfire Left One Teen Dead & Another Teen Detained In Juvenile Facility

Monday, March 2, 2026, 1:15 P.M. ET. 3 Minute Read, By Art Fletcher: Englebrook Independent News,

LAKEWOOD, NJ.- A juvenile has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting Sunday night in Lakewood, according to Bradley D. Billhimer.

     The Ocean County Prosecutor announced that on March 1, 2026, a juvenile was formally charged with first-degree Murder; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in connection with a shooting that occurred the same evening.

Police Response And Victim’s Death;

     Authorities said that at approximately 8:17 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, 2026, members of the Lakewood Township Police Department responded to the area of Pearl Street following reports of a male who had suffered a gunshot wound.

     Upon arrival, Police Officers located a juvenile male victim who had sustained a single gunshot wound to his back. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus for treatment.

     Despite lifesaving efforts, the juvenile tragically succumbed to his injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased a short time later at the hospital.

     Authorities have not publicly released the victim’s identity due to his age.

Multi-Agency Investigation;

     The fatal shooting prompted an intensive investigation conducted jointly by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit, the Lakewood Township Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.

     According to prosecutors, investigators determined that another juvenile was responsible for the shooting. Officials have not disclosed additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident, citing the ongoing nature of the case and the involvement of minors.

     The accused juvenile has been taken into custody and is currently being detained at the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center pending further court proceedings.

Juvenile Proceedings;

     Because the defendant is under the age of 18, the matter will proceed through the juvenile justice system unless a motion is filed to waive jurisdiction and prosecute the case in adult criminal court — a step that can occur in serious offenses such as homicide under New Jersey law.

Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they intend to seek a waiver to adult criminal court.

     Under New Jersey statutes, murder is a first-degree offense that carries severe penalties, including potential lengthy incarceration, even within the juvenile system, depending on the age of the offender and the outcome of court proceedings.

Community Impact;

     The shooting has shaken the Lakewood community, which has experienced isolated incidents of gun violence in recent years but remains one of the larger and more densely populated municipalities in Ocean County.

     Authorities have not indicated whether the shooting was targeted or random, and no additional suspects have been announced.

     The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Editor’s Note:

Because both the victim and the accused are juveniles, certain identifying information has been withheld in accordance with New Jersey law governing juvenile proceedings. All charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. Englebrook Independent News will continue to monitor this developing case and provide verified updates as additional information becomes available.
