Iselin Man Accused Of Driving On Wrong Side Of Route 27 In February Collision That Killed 22-Year-Old Colonia Woman & Seriously Injured Two Others

WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP, NJ.- An Iselin man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal head-on collision that occurred last month in Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County authorities announced.
According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera and Joseph Nisky, Director of the Woodbridge Police Department, Silvino Ruiz Alonso, 28, of Iselin, New Jesrey was formally charged on March 4, 2026, following an investigation into the crash that claimed the life of a 22-year-old Colonia woman.
Authorities said the collision occurred on February 18, 2026, at approximately 10:36 p.m., when officers from the Woodbridge Police Department responded to reports of a serious motor vehicle crash along Route 27 North near Deepa Auto Repair.
Upon arrival, police discovered that a 2013 Hyundai Tucson and a 2025 Nissan Altima had collided head-on.
Investigators identified Ruiz Alonso as the driver of the Hyundai Tucson. The Nissan Altima was being operated by Amber Torres, 22, of Colonia, New Jersey.
Officials said Torres sustained critical injuries in the crash. She was transported to JFK University Medical Center, where she was later pronounced deceased.
Two additional individuals were seriously injured in the collision. The front-seat passenger of the Altima, a 21-year-old woman from Colonia, and Ruiz Alonso, the driver of the Hyundai Tucson, were both transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for medical treatment.
The investigation into the crash was conducted by Investigator Adam Kazawic of the Woodbridge Police Department and Detective Stenly Vertus of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities said the investigation determined that the Hyundai Tucson driven by Ruiz Alonso had been traveling southbound on Route 27 when it entered the wrong side of the roadway, where it collided head-on with the Nissan Altima traveling northbound.
Following the investigation, Ruiz Alonso was charged with multiple offenses, including:
- First-degree Aggravated Manslaughter
- Second-degree Vehicular Homicide
- Second-degree Aggravated Assault
- Second-degree Assault by Auto
- Third-degree Endangering
Prosecutors said Ruiz Alonso is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center while awaiting a pre-trial detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
Authorities noted that the case remains an active and ongoing investigation.
