TOMS RIVER, NJ.- A fatal late-night motor vehicle collision in Ocean County remains under active investigation after a head-on crash along Lakewood Road claimed the life of a woman on March 7, 2026, according to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer.
Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 11:05 p.m. near the intersection of Lakewood Road and Whitty Road in Toms River Township. Police Officers from the Toms River Township Police Department responded to the scene after receiving reports of a serious motor vehicle collision.
According to preliminary findings released by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, investigators determined that a Volkswagen Jetta traveling southbound on Lakewood Road struck a guardrail on the passenger side. The impact caused the vehicle to lose control and cross into oncoming traffic, where it collided head-on with a northbound Honda Accord.
Emergency responders transported the driver of the Honda Accord to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where she was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, New Jersey, for treatment of injuries that officials described as non-life-threatening. As of the latest update from investigators, the individual is listed in stable condition.
Law enforcement officials at the scene reportedly observed indications that the driver of the Volkswagen may have been impaired at the time of the crash. As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities obtained a court-authorized blood draw, which was conducted at the hospital to determine whether alcohol or other substances may have contributed to the collision.
The investigation is being conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit–Vehicular Homicide Squad, in coordination with the Toms River Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
Officials emphasized that the investigation remains active and that no charges have been announced at this time. Prosecutors said additional information, including the results of toxicology testing and a full crash reconstruction analysis, will determine whether criminal charges may be warranted.
Lakewood Road remained partially closed for several hours overnight into Sunday morning, as investigators documented the scene, examined vehicle damage patterns, and collected physical evidence related to the crash.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has relevant information to contact the Toms River Township Police Department.
Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
