FANWOOD, NJ.- A Union County Grand Jury has returned a multi-count indictment against a Fanwood man accused of intentionally setting a fire that killed his elderly neighbor last summer, according to authorities.

Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Fanwood Police Chief Law Enforcement Officer Lieutenant Daniel Kranz announced that William Ahle, 70, of Fanwood, has been indicted on charges of first-degree Murder, first-degree Felony Murder, first-degree Home Invasion Burglary, and second-degree Aggravated Arson in connection with the death of Virginia Cranwell, 82, also of Fanwood.

The fatal incident occurred during the early morning hours of July 25, 2025.

Authorities said that at approximately 1:37 a.m., Fanwood police officers and fire department personnel were dispatched to a residence on Kempshall Terrace following a 911 call reporting a house fire with possible entrapment.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders encountered Ahle, a neighbor who had reported the fire. According to officials, Ahle informed emergency personnel that the occupant of the residence was still trapped inside the burning home.

Firefighters entered the structure and soon located the homeowner, Virginia Cranwell, inside the residence. Despite rescue efforts, Cranwell was pronounced dead.

According to Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Buermann, detectives from the Union County Prosecutor’s Office received information that prompted a detailed and coordinated investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

The investigation was conducted by members of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Special Prosecutions Unit/Arson Unit, working alongside the Fanwood Police Department, Union County Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit, and the Union County Fire Investigation Task Force.

Additional assistance was provided by the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety Fire Investigations K-9 Unit, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the Union County Emergency Response Team/SWAT Units.

Investigators ultimately identified Ahle as the suspect in the case.

Fire officials later determined that the blaze had been intentionally set, authorities said.

The Union County Medical Examiner’s Office subsequently ruled Cranwell’s death a homicide.

Following the investigation, the Union County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Ahle with multiple serious offenses tied to the fatal fire.

Under New Jersey law, first-degree murder and felony murder charges can carry potential sentences of 30 years to life in state prison if a defendant is convicted.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive in the case.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are asking anyone with additional information to contact law enforcement.

Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force Detective Darius Singletary at 908-632-0537, Sergeant Nicholas Veltre at 908-347-7330, or Fanwood Police Lieutenant Ryan Gilmore at 732-589-4631.

An indictment is a formal charge issued by a grand jury and is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
