31-Year-Old Man Identified As Victim In Southeast Washington, D.C. Shooting; Police Seek Public’s Help

WASHINGTON, DC.- Authorities with the Metropolitan Police Department have launched an active homicide investigation following a fatal shooting that occurred Monday evening in the Marshall Heights neighborhood of Southeast Washington, D.C., leaving a 31-year-old District resident dead.
According to officials, the incident unfolded on Monday, March 9, 2026, at approximately 6:27 p.m., when Police Officers assigned to the Sixth District responded to reports of gunfire in the 5000 block of E Street, Southeast, D.C.
Upon arrival, responding officers located an adult male lying unconscious and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Police Officers immediately secured the scene and requested emergency medical assistance.
Personnel from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded shortly thereafter and initiated lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police later identified the victim as Terrance Lavelle Crutchfield, 31, of Northeast Washington, D.C.
Authorities have not yet released information regarding potential suspects, a possible motive, or whether the shooting stemmed from a targeted encounter or a broader criminal incident. Investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are currently leading the investigation and canvassing the surrounding neighborhood for surveillance footage and potential witnesses.
The area where the shooting occurred is part of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sixth District, which covers a large portion of Southeast Washington and has experienced periodic incidents of gun violence in recent years. Police have increased investigative activity in the immediate vicinity as detectives work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
Officials are urging members of the public who may have seen or heard anything related to the incident to come forward.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked not to approach potential suspects, but instead contact the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099. Tips may also be submitted anonymously by sending a text message to 50411 through the department’s TEXT TIP LINE.
Investigators emphasize that even small details from witnesses can be critical in helping detectives identify those responsible and bring closure to the victim’s family.
