Armed Suspect Killed After Crashing Truck Into Temple Israel; FBI Calls Incident A Targeted Act Of Violence

Friday, March 13, 2026, 8:00 A.M. ET. 5 Minute Read, By Haylee Ficuciello, Senior Correspondent: Englebrook Independent News,

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI.- Federal and local authorities are continuing to investigate a violent vehicle-ramming and shooting attack that unfolded Thursday afternoon at Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform Jewish synagogues in the United States, after a heavily armed suspect drove a truck into the building and exchanged gunfire with security before dying inside the burning vehicle.

     Law enforcement officials identified the attacker as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, a Lebanese-born naturalized U.S. citizen who lived in Dearborn Heights, Michigan. Ghazali was killed during the confrontation after synagogue security personnel opened fire following the vehicle-ramming attack.

     The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has taken the lead in the investigation and described the incident as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” Authorities are still working to determine the precise sequence of events that led to Ghazali’s death and whether it resulted from gunfire, the fire inside the vehicle, or other factors.

Timeline Of The Attack;

     According to investigators, the attack began shortly before 12:19 p.m. Thursday at Temple Israel, located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road in West Bloomfield Township, about 25 miles northwest of Detroit.

     Authorities say Ghazali drove a truck directly through the synagogue’s main entrance doors, sending the vehicle into the building’s interior hallway.

     Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters the suspect continued driving inside the building after breaching the entrance, creating chaos inside the facility. Armed security personnel stationed at the synagogue quickly confronted him.

     Investigators say the suspect was armed with a rifle and exchanged gunfire with security guards. One security officer fired multiple shots toward the suspect’s vehicle as the threat unfolded.

     During the confrontation, the synagogue’s director of security was struck by the vehicle, briefly losing consciousness before being rescued by fellow security personnel. He was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover.

     Moments later, the suspect’s vehicle ignited inside the building, sending heavy smoke into the structure and forcing first responders to manage both a potential shooting scene and a developing fire.

     Authorities reported that Ghazali’s body was discovered inside the burned vehicle after the fire was extinguished.

Fire, Explosives, And Hazardous Materials;

     Investigators say the blaze may have been triggered by materials inside the truck. Law enforcement sources reported that suspected explosives or chemical materials were discovered in the vehicle following the attack.

     Bomb technicians and federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) were dispatched to the scene to secure and analyze the vehicle and any explosive devices that may have been present.

     Smoke from the fire spread through parts of the synagogue, complicating the emergency response and prompting a large-scale evacuation of the facility.

Children Inside The Synagogue;

     At the time of the attack, an early childhood education center located inside Temple Israel was in session, with approximately 140 children and staff members present.

     Teachers and staff quickly moved children into secure areas as law enforcement arrived. Officials confirmed that none of the children or staff were injured during the incident.

     Authorities later credited recent active-shooter preparedness training conducted at the synagogue with helping staff respond quickly during the crisis.

Injuries And Emergency Response;

     While no congregants were harmed, the incident triggered a massive emergency response from local, state, and federal agencies.

     Officials reported:

  • 1 synagogue security guard injured after being struck by the vehicle
  • Approximately 30 responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation
  • Multiple first responders were transported to nearby hospitals for evaluation

     Firefighters and emergency crews worked for hours to ventilate the building and secure the scene.

Regional Security Measures;

     In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Jewish institutions across the Detroit metropolitan area were placed on heightened alert or temporary lockdown, while police increased patrols near synagogues and other religious facilities.

     Local schools and nearby facilities were also briefly placed under shelter-in-place advisories as police searched the area and ensured no additional threats existed.

Investigation And Possible Motive;

     Federal investigators say the motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

     According to law enforcement sources, Ghazali had recently experienced family losses in Lebanon during regional conflict, though authorities have not confirmed whether those events were directly connected to the attack.

     The FBI, along with Michigan State Police and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, continues to examine the suspect’s background, digital communications, and potential ideological motivations.

     Officials have not yet determined whether the incident will be formally classified as domestic terrorism. However, federal authorities say it is being treated as a targeted attack on a religious institution.

Temple Israel;

     Temple Israel is widely regarded as one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States, serving thousands of member families in the Detroit metropolitan area.

     The synagogue complex includes worship space, educational facilities, and a large early childhood center.

Officials Condemn The Attack;

     Political leaders and community organizations across the country quickly condemned the violence.

     Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated that antisemitism and violence “have no place in Michigan,” while national leaders emphasized the need to protect religious communities and houses of worship.

     Jewish organizations nationwide also called for increased vigilance and security at synagogues following the attack.
