Former DOJ Attorney Julie Le Launches Democratic Challenge As Scrutiny Grows Over Omar’s Finances & Political Future In Minnesota’s 5th District

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN.- After years as one of the most polarizing members of Congress, Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar may soon face a serious political test from within her own party.
Former Department of Justice attorney Julie Le, who gained national attention earlier this year after telling a federal judge she was overwhelmed by her immigration-related caseload, has officially entered the Democratic primary to challenge Omar for Minnesota’s heavily Democratic 5th Congressional District seat.
Le’s candidacy sets the stage for what could become the most significant intraparty challenge Omar has faced since first being elected to Congress in 2018.
A Challenger Emerges From The Justice Department;
Le, a former immigration prosecutor who worked with federal authorities handling a surge of immigration cases in Minnesota, drew headlines after a candid courtroom exchange in February in which she admitted the workload had become nearly unmanageable.
During a hearing before U.S. District Judge Jerry Blackwell, Le bluntly told the court the situation was untenable, saying the system and the job itself were effectively broken as lawyers scrambled to process hundreds of immigration-related petitions.
Reports indicate she had been assigned roughly 88 cases in less than a month, contributing to the extraordinary pressure that led to the outburst.
Le was subsequently removed from her assignment, but the episode also catapulted her into the national spotlight. Now she appears ready to channel that notoriety into a political campaign.
According to statements tied to her campaign announcement, Le plans to run as a Democrat focused on immigration reform, expanded education funding, and improved access to healthcare, arguing that lawmakers, not government lawyers, ultimately have the power to change the laws that drive federal policy.
She is expected to formally launch her campaign in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, which is part of the Minneapolis-area district that Omar has represented since 2019.
Omar’s Political Position;
Omar, a member of the progressive congressional faction commonly referred to as “The Squad,” has been one of the most recognizable and frequently controversial figures in the Democratic Party for years.
The Minnesota Democrat won reelection in 2024 with more than 74 percent of the vote, and the district remains one of the most reliably Democratic in the country.
Still, the emergence of a primary challenger could complicate her path forward, particularly as critics argue that Omar has increasingly become a lightning rod for national political controversies rather than a purely local representative.
While Le has said her campaign is not intended as a personal attack on Omar, the political reality is that any challenger in a Democratic primary must persuade voters that the incumbent is no longer the best choice for the district.
That argument may become easier to make as Omar faces renewed scrutiny over her finances.
Questions About A Sudden Surge In Wealth;
Financial disclosures filed with Congress have recently drawn attention to a dramatic increase in Omar’s reported household wealth.
According to those filings, Omar and her husband, political consultant Timothy Mynett, reported a net worth ranging from roughly $6 million to as much as $30 million in their most recent disclosure.
That marked a dramatic shift from the previous year, when the couple reported assets worth between approximately $40,000 and $250,000.
The surge has been attributed largely to the rising valuation of two businesses connected to Mynett:
- Rose Lake Capital, a venture capital firm
- eStCru LLC, a California winery
Both companies reportedly experienced significant increases in value between 2023 and 2024.
The scale and speed of the jump have prompted questions from political critics and investigators alike. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has sought financial records connected to the companies, citing concerns about the valuation increases and lack of publicly available investor information.
Omar has denied any wrongdoing and dismissed allegations of impropriety, arguing that her finances have been fully disclosed in accordance with federal law.
A Primary That Could Test The District;
Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis and several surrounding suburbs, is known for its progressive politics and large immigrant communities.
Omar has historically maintained strong support there, but primary challenges are often unpredictable, especially when they involve candidates who can claim firsthand experience with the federal systems they hope to reform.
Le’s campaign message appears to be centered on practical governance rather than ideological warfare, positioning her as someone who has seen the federal bureaucracy from the inside.
Whether that message resonates with Democratic voters remains to be seen.
What is clear is that Omar, long accustomed to battling Republican critics, may now have to defend her record against someone wearing the same party label.
And in politics, those are often the toughest fights of all.
