WASHINGTON, DC.- The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department has announced an arrest in connection with a stabbing that occurred Tuesday afternoon in Northwest Washington, following a brief altercation between two individuals on a downtown street.
According to Metropolitan Police Department officials, the incident unfolded on March 17, 2026, at approximately 4:58 p.m. in the 900 block of G Street, Northwest. Investigators say the victim was walking along the block when he inadvertently bumped into a man later identified as the suspect.
What began as a minor physical encounter quickly escalated into a verbal dispute, police said. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the victim. Authorities have not publicly disclosed the extent of the victim’s injuries, but confirmed that emergency response protocols were initiated following the attack.
After the stabbing, the suspect reportedly took advantage of the chaos of the moment. Police state that the victim’s phone had fallen to the ground during the altercation, at which point the suspect allegedly seized the device before fleeing the scene on foot.
A short time later, officers with the D.C. Library Police encountered and detained an individual matching the suspect’s description nearby. Metropolitan Police confirmed that the individual was subsequently identified as 30-year-old Isiah Robert Barnes, who is listed as having no fixed address.
Barnes was placed under arrest and charged with multiple offenses, including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Knife), Theft II, and Possession of an Open Container of Alcohol.
Authorities also confirmed that the knife believed to have been used in the stabbing has been recovered as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Metropolitan Police Department has not released additional details regarding a possible motive beyond the initial altercation, and no further suspects are being sought at this time.
The case remains under investigation.
