39-Year-Old Jersey City Man Sentenced To 28 Years In State Prison For 2022 Morris County Best Buy Robbery

EAST HANOVER, NJ.- Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll reported, on Friday, May 10, 2024, a 39-year-old Jersey City, New Jersey man was sentenced to 28 years in New Jersey State Prison in connection with an armed robbery at the East Hanover Best Buy Electronics Store that occurred in May of 2022.
Last Friday, Michael Guirguis, 39, of Jersey City appeared in Morris County Superior Court and was sentenced by the Honorable Ralph E. Amirata, J.S.C. to a term of 28 years in New Jersey State Prison on the charges of first-degree Robbery; third-degree Shoplifting; third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Judge Amirata ordered Guirguis to serve 23 years and 9 months of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, on March 22, 2024, Guirguis was found guilty following a trial on first-degree Armed Robbery; third-degree Shoplifting; third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Following the jury’s verdicts, Judge Amirata found Guirguis guilty of Resisting Arrest.
The conviction and sentence stem from an investigation that began on May 28, 2022, when members of the East Hanover Police Department responded to a report of a robbery and disturbance at the East Hanover Electronics Store located on Route 10 in East Hanover.
Upon arrival, Police Officers learned that Guirguis had entered the store and removed numerous iPads and iPhones from a display table. The items taken had a total value of $4,500. As he tried to flee the store, Guirguis pulled out a knife and threatened the store’s loss prevention employee. Guirgus also threatened a second loss prevention employee as he stepped outside the store with the stolen items.
Police Officers immediately conducted a search of the store’s parking lot and found Guirguis in the parking lot with the knife and the stolen items. Guirguis refused to comply with Police Officers’ orders and had to be apprehended by force.
