JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ.- On Friday, a 38-year-old Jackson Township, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed in connection with the stabbing death of his 74-year-old roommate Friday morning inside their Jackson Township home.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, Louis Gargiso, 38, of Jackson Township, has been charged with first-degree Murder; third-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and fourth-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Gargiso was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Ocean County Jail pending future court proceedings in Ocean County Superior Court.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Friday, July 19, 2024, when, shortly before 6:00 a.m., members of the Jackson Township Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting an unconscious man inside a Maple Street residence in the Township.

Upon arrival, Police Officers found the body of a man, later identified as Robert Sunris, 74, of Jackson Township, deceased from an apparent stab wound. Officers also located a knife near Mr. Sunris’ body. A subsequent autopsy by the Ocean County Medical Examination determined the cause of death as a stab wound and the manner of death to be a homicide.

A swift-moving investigation by Ocean County Authorities quickly determined that Gargiso and Mr. Sunris were roommates who resided together in the Maple Street residence as roommates. An apparent dispute or altercation may have erupted between the two men, which led to the stabbing. Detectives determined that Gargios was the individual responsible for the fatal stabbing of Mr. Suris. Gargios was taken into custody at the scene.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
