Man Charged With Attempting To Sexually Assault Woman

30-Year-Old New Milford Man Charged With Thursday Night’s Attempted  Sexual Assault Of A Woman At Mall

HACKENSACK, NJ.- Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella reported that on Friday, July 26, 2024, a 30-year-old New Milford, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and charged in connection with Thursday night’s alleged attempted sexual assault of a woman at the Riverside Square Mall.

     On Friday, July 26, 2024, the Hackensack Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding Thursday night’s attempted sexual assault of a woman at the Riverside Square Mall in Hackensack, New Jersey.

     A joint investigation was launched by Detectives of the Bergen County Special Victims Unit and the Hackensack Police Department, determined that a man followed a woman into a woman’s restroom inside the mall, shoving her to the ground and attempting to sexually assault her. The woman was able to fight off the man before calling 911 for Police assistance. The man fled the scene but was captured on security surveillance video footage.

     Detectives of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hackensack Police Department, with the assistance of the New Milford Police Department and the River Edge Police Department, were to identify the suspect as Craig L. Herbert, 30, of New Milford, New Jersey, and the individual responsible for the alleged attack of the woman.

     Following the identification, Herbert was located and taken into custody Friday afternoon in New Milford and formally charged at the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office in Paramus, New Jersey, with second-degree Attempted Sexual Assault; third-degree Criminal Restraint; fourth-degree Criminal Sexual Contact; and a Disorderly Persons Offense of Simple Assault.

     Herbert was processed on the charges and was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending future court proceedings in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, New Jersey.
