Charges Filed

Christian Kohl, 46, was formally charged with Possession of Child Pornography; Attempted Endangering the Welfare of a Child; and Attempt to Provide Obscene Material to a Minor.

The charges are the result of an investigation that began after the New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received cyber-tips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that an individual was utilizing the internet to send and receive digital images depicting nude and sexually explicit children.

During the course of the investigation, Detectives of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit were able to identify an IP address associated with Brick Township, New Jersey residence as the location from where the individual was accessing the internet to download and distribute images of Child Pornography.

Detective Poses As Teen

During the months of May 2024 and continuing through August 2024, a Detective was conducting an investigation on the Kik Messenger application. During the Detective’s investigation, posing as a 14-year-old girl engaged in conversations with a person who identified himself as a 38-year-old man.

During the conversations, the man sent multiple inappropriate nude photos and videos of himself to the Detective, although the Detective advised the man that “she” was only 14 years old on multiple occasions. The man was subsequently identified as Kohl.

Search Warrant

On Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the conclusion of the investigation, Local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies executed a court-authorized search warrant on Kohl’s Brick Township residence. An initial examination of Kohl’s cell phone uncovered several items of child pornography.

Accordingly, following the search, Kohl was taken into custody. After being processed on the charges, Kohl was remanded to the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing in Ocean County Superior Court in Toms River, New Jersey.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
