Paterson Man Charged For August 31, 2024, Shooting Death Of Man

PATERSON, NJ.- On Tuesday, September 2, 2024, a 37-year-old Paterson, New Jersey, man was taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with fatally gunning down Raheem Porter, 41, of Paterson, early Saturday morning on a Paterson, New Jersey street.

Charges Filed

     According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, Daquann Barnes, 37, of Paterson, New Jersey, has been formally charged with first-degree Murder; second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon; second-degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose; and second-degree Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons.

     Barnes was processed on the charges and was remanded to an area county correctional facility pending future court proceedings in Passaic County Superior Court in Paterson, New Jersey. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion to detain Barnes pending trial.

     The charges stem from an investigation that began on Saturday, August 31, 2024, when, at just around 2:47 a.m., members of the Paterson Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter activation near the intersection of Auburn and Ellison Streets in the City of Paterson.

Police Locate Man Shot

     Upon arrival, Police Officers found a man, later identified as Raheem Porter, 41, of Paterson, New Jersey, unresponsive from gunshot wounds, lying face down on the ground. Mr. Porter was immediately transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

     An ensuing investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department was able to quickly identify Barnes as the suspect and the individual responsible for the shooting death of Mr. Porter. On Monday, Barnes was located and taken into custody by Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Investigations Unit members.

     If convicted at trial on the charges, Barnes faces a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of life in New Jersey State Prison.

     The investigation remains active and ongoing.
