Wayne Man Charged For Parsippany-Troy Hills Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash

PARSIPPANY, NJ.- Morris County Prosecutor Robert J. Carroll reported a 31-year-old Wayne, New Jersey, man has been taken into custody and jailed after being charged in connection with fatally running down a pedestrian and fleeing the scene.

     Davut Batca, 31, of Wayne, has been formally charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of an Accident Under Certain Circumstances. 

     The charge stems from an investigation that began on Monday, August 19, 2024, when shortly before 10:00 p.m., the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office was notified by the Parsippany-Troy Hills Police Department that a man had been struck by a motor vehicle that the fled the scene on Route 46 West near Sandra Dive in Parsippany.

Victim Identified

     The man, identified as Jelson Cabrera, 35, of Trenton, New Jersey, was immediately transported to Morristown Medical Center, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased. 

     During the initial investigation, Detectives determined that the vehicle that struck the man was believed to be a newer model Toyota Rav4. A subsequent investigation determined that Batca was the driver of the Toyota Rav4 of the vehicle that fled the scene on August 19, 2024. It has further been alleged that Batca had been operating his parent’s Toyota Rav4 when he fatally struck the man.

Fled The Country To Avoid Apprehension

     Authorities learned that Batca had fled the United States for Turkey in the days following the accident. Upon his return to the United States, Batca was apprehended in New York and lodged in the Morris County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings in Morris County Superior Court.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
