JERSEY CITY, NJ.- On Thursday, September 19, 2024, Darius Evans, 49, formerly of Jersey City, New Jersey, appeared in Hudson County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge John A. Young to 16 years in New Jersey State Prison for the 2021 New Year’s Day stabbing death of Tyrone Haskins in Jersey City, New Jersey.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, Evans had previously pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree Aggravated Manslaughter before Judge Young on May 21, 2024. In handing down the sentence, Judge Young ordered Evans to serve 85% of the custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.

The guilty plea and Thursday’s sentence stem from an incident that occurred on January 1, 2021, when, at approximately 2:45 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a possible stabbing victim being found at 333 Ocean Avenue in Jersey City.
