PERTH AMBOY, NJ.- Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone reported that on Friday, September 20, 2024, a 61-year-old Perth Amboy, New Jersey, man surrendered to authorities after being charged in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on August 23, 2024, in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.
The charges stem from an investigation that began on Friday, August 23, 2024, when just shortly before 6:00 p.m., members of the Perth Amboy Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a serious multi-motor vehicle crash in the area of Kamm Road and Convery Boulevard in the City of Perth Amboy.
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a motorcyclist, identified as Michael Fernandez, 25, of Perth Amboy, lying in the roadway suffering from multiple life-threatening injuries. Mr. Fernandez was immediately transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Suspect Charged Following Investigation
A subsequent investigation conducted by Detective Kyle Savoia of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Detective Matthew Colonna of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that Mr. Fernandez, while on his motorcycle, was attempting to turn onto Convery Boulevard when he was struck by a sedan being driven by Jorge Lopez, 61, of Perth Amboy.
The sedan driven by Lopez first struck Mr. Fernandez on the motorcycle and then veered into and struck a second vehicle, causing the driver of the second sedan to sustain minor injuries in the collision. Further investigation determined that Lopez was operating his motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Accordingly, after being notified of pending charges, Lopez surrendered himself to the Perth Amboy Police Department on Friday, September 20, 2024, and was formally charged with one count of second-degree Vehicular Homicide; Driving While Intoxicated, and multiple other motor vehicle summonses. Lopez was processed on the charges pending future court proceedings in Middlesex County Superior Court.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with additional information regarding this collision is asked to contact Detective Savoia of the Perth Amboy Police Department at (732) 324-3837 or Detective Colonna of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-3354.
