Huntington Woman Sentenced To Prison For Illicit Drug Trafficking

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.- On Monday, October 3, 2024, Kyla Smith, also known as “Flaca,” 29, of Huntington, West Virginia, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Chambers to 120 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release for Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.
During Monday’s sentencing hearing, Smith admitted in court that she was part of a drug trafficking organization that distributed large amounts of methamphetamine and fentanyl throughout the Southern District of West Virginia.
Charging Documents Filed With The Court
According to documents filed with the court, on October 29, 2023, a law enforcement officer conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle being driven by Smith on Eighth Avenue in Huntington, West Virginia. Smith admitted that the Police Officer saw her conceal a bag of methamphetamine in the front of her pants during the traffic stop.
Smith ultimately surrendered the bag of methamphetamine to the Police Officer and admitted that she intended to sell and distribute the illicit narcotic. During her arrest, Smith further admitted that she played an active role in a drug trafficking organization from at least August 2023 through November 2023.
At that time, Smith distributed methamphetamine and fentanyl to multiple customers, including some who redistributed the controlled dangerous substances that she provided to them.
Smith Uses Davis Street Residence
Smith and other drug trafficking organization members used multiple residences to store and distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl from, including a Davis Street residence in Huntington, West Virginia, that Smith controlled. On November 15, 2023, Detectives and Investigators executed a court-authorized search warrant at the Davis Street residence, where law enforcement found 477 grams of fentanyl.
U.S. Attorney Will Thompson reported that Smith is among 27 people named in a 53-count indictment that charges the defendants with distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl brought in from Detroit, Michigan, into Huntington and other locations throughout the Southern District of West Virginia.
Smith is among 21 people who have pleaded guilty in the main case. One other of the 27 indicted individuals pleaded guilty to a related offense in a separate prosecution. The indictment against the remaining defendants remains pending.
U.S. Attorney Thompson further commended the efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in investigating, arresting, and enforcing the indictments in this case.
