D.C. Man Sentenced To Federal Prison For Shooting Man For Cigarette

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Friday, October 4, 2024, Tyrone Johnson, 43, of Washington, D.C., appeared in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Marisa Demeo to 240 months, followed by five years of supervised release, after being convicted by a federal jury.
According to U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, in June 2024, following a trial in U.S. District Court, a Federal Jury found Johnson guilty on the charges of Aggravated Assault While Armed; Assault with a Dangerous Weapon; Assault Causing Serious Bodily Injury While Armed; three counts of Possession of a Firearm During Crimes of Violence; Unlawful Possession of a Firearm; Carrying a Firearm Without a License; Possession of a Unregistered Firearm; and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.
Evidence Presented At Trial
According to evidence and testimony presented at trial on August 30, 2022, shortly after 5:30 a.m., Johnson entered the Starburst Plaza, located at the intersection of Benning Road Northeast and Bladensburg Road Northeast, and asked the victim if he could purchase a cigarette from him.
The victim had no cigarettes and told Johnson, “NO.” Johnson then told the victim to “GIVE IT UP” before pulling out a handgun. Johnson then, at close range, fired multiple shots at the victim, striking him in the midsection of his body. After shooting the victim, Johnson then ran into a nearby apartment complex.
Metropolitan Police Officers and Detectives were later able to identify Johnson by using area surveillance footage, GPS records, and ballistic evidence that linked Johnson to this shooting as well as one committed just one week before.
