Former Sanbornton Man Sentenced To Federal Prison For Child Pornography

CONCORD, NH.- Last Tuesday, October 8, 2024, Timothy Ryan, 35, formerly of Sanbornton, New Hampshire, appeared in U.S. District Court for the District of New Hampshire and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Steven McAuliffe to 87 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release for two counts of Possession of Child Pornography.

According to U.S. Attorney Jane E. Young, in December 2022, Ryan was first charged with one count of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material. In November 2023, while Ryan had been released on pre-trial monitoring for the first charge, again possessed child pornography and was subsequently charged with another count of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.

While in federal custody, on June 27, 2024, Ryan appeared in U.S. District Court and pleaded guilty to a superseding indictment charging him with two counts of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.

According To Documents Filed With The Court

According to documents filed with the district court, Ryan was identified as a top-tier offender in the State of New Hampshire for supplying Child Pornography through a peer-to-peer online file-sharing network. Federal investigators traced the illicit Internet activity to Ryan’s residence. Investigators obtained and executed a court-authorized search warrant on his home. During the December 13, 2022, search, investigators seized multiple electronic devices from Ryan’s home and person.

A subsequent forensic analysis of Ryan’s electronic devices uncovered 2,600 digital files depicting nude and sexually explicit prepubescent and pubescent children. Following the discovery of the files, Ryan was charged by complaint and later in an indictment with one count of Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.

Second Child Pornography Offense Uncovered

In November 2023, while Ryan was on federal bond for the charge, federal investigators with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs received a cyber tip that an IP address associated with one of its residential facilities in Massachusetts was being utilized regularly to distribute known child pornography on the same peer-to-peer online file-sharing network.

Further investigation discovered that Ryan had moved into that facility around the same time that the illicit activity was first detected. In December 2023, federal investigators executed a second court-authorized search warrant on Ryan’s private room at the facility, which resulted in the seizure of more electronic devices that ultimately contained hundreds of digital files and images of child pornography. Based on the discovery, a second charge was filed against Ryan.

“The defendant was caught possessing thousands of images depicting child sexual abuse, not once, but twice. His contempt for the conditions of his pre-trial release, lacked remorse, and brazen disregard for accountability is appalling,” said U.S. Attorney Jane E. Young. “The defendant will now serve a lengthy prison sentence, preventing him from causing harm to child survivors of sexual abuse.”

“Despite being arrested by federal agents for possessing child sexual abuse material, Ryan continued to access Child Sexual Abuse Material while out on bond, resulting in additional federal charges. Now, he’ll be spending the next several years in federal prison,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael Krol for Homeland Security Investigations in New England. “HSI remains committed to working with our partners to hold offenders like Ryan to account.”

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
