ABERDEEN, NJ.- Following an investigation, last week a 64-year-old Matawan, New Jersey, woman was charged in connection with fatally running down a 58-year-old woman in the roadway and fleeing the scene that occurred on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, in Aberdeen, New Jersey.
According to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago, Sonia Gomez, 64, of Matawan, New Jersey, has been formally charged with second-degree Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash. Ms. Gomez was processed on the charge; the details of her custody are unknown at this time, but as of Friday, October 18, 2024, she remained detained in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.
The charge stems from an investigation that began on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, when, at approximately 7:24 p.m., members of the Aberdeen Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a pedestrian being struck at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 2nd Street, by a motor vehicle that fled the scene.
Upon arrival, Police Officers found a woman, later identified as Judith Fox-Hernandez, 58, lying in the roadway, suffering from serious injuries. Ms. Fox-Hernandez was immediately transported to Jersey Shore University Medical, where she remained in critical condition until Sunday, September 29, 2024, when she tragically succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.
Investigation Identifies Gomez As The Suspect
During an ensuing investigation, members of the Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau, and the Aberdeen Police Department determined that while walking along Atlantic Avenue, Ms. Fox-Hernandez was struck by a 2015 Honda Pilot driven by Gomez. After striking Ms. Fox-Hernandez, Gomez did not stop, nor did she report the collision to authorities.
