Washington County Man Pleads Guilty To Federal Firearm Violation

JOHNSTOWN, PA.- On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Derik Carothers, 29, of Washington, Pennsylvania, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania and pleaded guilty before Senior U.S. District Court Judge Kim R. Gibson to count four of the indictment for Being a Prohibit Person in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition.
According to federal law, a person convicted of a felony is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.
According To Charging Information
According to Documents filed with the court, on or about October 20, 2019, in the Western District of Pennsylvania, Carothers possessed multiple firearms and ammunition as a previously convicted felon.
Carothers was convicted on November 7, 2013, in the Cambria County Court of Common Pleas of burglary and carrying a firearm without a license, and on March 17, 2017, Carothers was again convicted of carrying a firearm without a license or permit.
On Wednesday, after entering his guilty plea, Judge Gibson accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for March 12, 2025, at which time, Carothers faces up to 10 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. The actual term of incarceration will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge based on the seriousness of the offense and Carothers’ prior criminal history.
