NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ.- Following an investigation, an 18-year-old Philadelphia man, who is currently a student at Rutgers University, New Brunswick Campus, was taken into custody and charged in connection with secretly recording female students.

According to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone, on October 2, 2024, the Rutgers Police Department received a call reporting that a female student was being recorded while in the bathroom of her college dorm. Over the next few days, the Rutgers Police Department received reports of similar incidents occurring in other college dorms.

Investigation Identifies Suspect

An ensuing investigation, led by Sergeant Robert Calvert of the Rutgers University Police Department and Detective Haley Hlavka of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, was able to identify a student, Michael Williams, 18, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the individual who used his cellular phone to record multiple female victims while in the shower.

Accordingly, on Friday, October 26, 2024, Williams was taken into custody without incident and jailed after being charged with three counts of third-degree Invasion of Privacy; and one count of fourth-degree Tampering with Evidence.

Williams was processed on the charges and was transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending future court proceedings in Middlesex County Superior Court. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a pre-trial detention motion with the court to detain Williams pending trial.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
