Baltimore Man & West Virginia Fentanyl Sentenced To Prison

ELKINS, W.VA.- On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Michael Anthony Matthews, 35, of Baltimore, Maryland, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Thomas S. Kleeh to 100 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea to Conspiracy to Distribute Fentanyl.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Warner and documents filed with the court, Matthews was a significant source of fentanyl in the Northern District of West Virginia, specifically the Moorefield and Petersburg areas of West Virginia.
Import Fentanyl From Baltimore Into West Virginia
Matthews would arrange transportation and supply large quantities of fentanyl from his home in Baltimore, Maryland, to runners who would transport the illicit narcotics into West Virginia. During the investigation, agents of the Potomac Highlands Drug Task Force seized around 9,000 fentanyl pills with a total weight of more than two kilograms.
