Bergenfield Man Sentenced For Transporting Heroin Into Connecticut

BRIDGEPORT, CT.- On Friday, November 1, 2024, Jose Martin Chavez-Valencia, 37, of Bergenfield, New Jersey, appeared in U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Kari A. Dooley to 57 months in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release on his previously entered guilty plea narcotics trafficking.

     According to U.S. Attorney Vanessa Avery Roberts, Chavez-Valencia previously appeared on March 4, 2024, in U.S. District Court and pleaded guilty to one count of Conspiracy to Distribute and Possess with Intent to Distribute 100 Grams or More of Heroin.

     According to documents filed with the district court, undercover agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration New Haven Drug Task Force arranged to purchase three kilograms of a combination of heroin and fentanyl from Chavez-Valencia associates.

Chavez-Valencia Busted With Three Kilograms Of Heroin

     On September 26, 2022, Chavez-Valencia drove from New Jersey to a parking lot in West Haven, Connecticut, to complete that narcotics transaction. At that time, Chavez-Valencia was immediately taken into custody, and a subsequent search of his vehicle led to three kilograms being found. After the discovery, investigators seized nearly two kilograms of heroin that Chavez-Valencia possessed.

     U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery commended the investigative efforts of members of the Drug Enforcement Administration for the investigation, arrest, and Chavez-Valencia’s conviction and federal prison sentence.
