WASHINGTON, DC.- On Friday, a 25-year-old Capitol Heights, Maryland, man was taken into custody and charged in connection with the September 2024 shooting death of a 44-year-old Northeast, D.C. man.

According to D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith, the arrest is the result of an investigation that began shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2024, when members of the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a 911 Emergency Call reporting a man lying on the ground on the 2200 Block of Adams Place in Northeast, D.C.

Upon arrival, Police Officers located a man, later identified as Erik Mewborn, 44, of Northeast, D.C., unresponsive from a gunshot wound. Mr. Mewborn was pronounced deceased at the scene by DC Fire and Emergency Services personnel.

Investigation Leads To Simms Being Identified

During an ensuing investigation, Metropolitan Homicide Unit Detectives were able to identify, through area surveillance footage, Jeremiah Simms as the suspect and the individual responsible for the shooting death of Mr. Mewborn. Accordingly, Detectives filed charges against Simms, charging him with second-degree Murder While Armed and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

On Friday, November 22, 2024, members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located Simms and took him into custody pursuant to the D.C. Superior Court warrant. Simms was processed on the charge and remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the D.C. Superior Court.
