WASHINGTON, DC.- D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith reported that following an investigation, on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, Metropolitan Police Officers arrested a 37-year-old Maryland man in connection with July’s hammer attack of an individual in Northwest, D.C.

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, at around 10:10 p.m., members of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District responded to a report of an assault on the 2400 Block of 18th Street in Northwest, D.C.

Upon arrival, Police Officers learned that a man, later identified as Magel Duarte, 37, of Bethesda, Maryland, attacked an individual with a hammer and fled the scene in a motor vehicle. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment and subsequently released.

During an extensive months-long investigation, Detectives were able to identify Duarte as the assailant, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. On Tuesday, Officers of the D.C. Third District Crime Suppression Unit located and arrested Duarte on a D.C. Superior Court warrant and formally charged him with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

Duarte was processed on the charge and was remanded to the D.C. Central Detention Facility pending future court proceedings in the D.C. Superior Court.

“The rules of the court require us to include a statement that states: The charges outlined in this publication are merely accusations, and the defendant and or defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.”
