Troy Man Pleads Guilty To Possessing Improvised Explosive Devices

DAYTON, OH.- On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Steven J. Werling, 50, of Troy, Ohio, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Michael J. Newman to Illegally Possessing Unregistered Destructive Devices.
During his plea allocation on Wednesday afternoon, Werling admitted in U.S. District Court that in April 2024, he knowingly possessed two improvised explosive devices in violation of the Federal Firearms Act. In return for the guilty plea, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will recommend that Werling be sentenced to 24 months in federal prison.
According to U.S. Attorney Kenneth L. Parker and charging documents filed with the court, following an investigation into Werling’s internet activities related to the construction of improvised explosive devices and purchases made for materials for the assembly of such devices. On April 4, 2024, and April 5, 2024, federal agents obtained and executed a court-authorized search warrant at Werling’s home on Barnhart Road in Troy.
During the search, investigators uncovered two plastic cylinders that contained an explosive mixture, rendering them an unregistered, destructive device and in violation of federal firearms statutes.
