DALLAS, TX.- An illegal Mexican man who was previously deported from the United States after serving an eight-year Texas State Prison sentence for running down and killing a pedestrian while driving drunk has been sentenced to federal prison for illegally reentering the United States.
According to U.S. Attorney Leigha Simonton, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Guadalupe Gerardo Reyes-Gonzalez, a Mexican National, appeared in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Ada Brown to 180 months in federal prison for his August 2024, guilty plea to Illegal Reentry into the United States by a Previously Deported Alien.
According to state court records, Reyes-Gonzalez had been convicted of intoxicated manslaughter in 1997 after he crashed into a male pedestrian, causing such severe trauma that he died shortly after arriving at the hospital. A subsequent blood alcohol concentration analysis revealed that he was nearly twice the legal limit. After being convicted, Reyes-Gonzalez was sentenced to eight years in State Prison.
After serving his sentence, Reyes-Gonzalez was deported and returned to the United States several times. In 2021, Reyes-Gonzalez once again was arrested and convicted and served three days for driving intoxicated. After serving the three days, he was turned over to federal authorities and charged with illegal reentry.
In handing down the sentence, Judge Brown noted that Reyes-Gonzalez had already killed one U.S. citizen, and the 180-month sentence would protect the public. Following completing his federal sentence, Reyes-Gonzalez will be turned over to Immigration Customs and Enforcement for removal from the United States.
