CLARKSBURG, W.VA.- A 57-year-old Mt. Zion man learned that he would be spending nearly the next five years in federal prison for possessing a firearm while being on state probation for a previous felony conviction.
On Friday, December 13, 2024, Victor L. Carpenter, 57, of Mt. Zion, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Thomas S. Kleeh to 57 months in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his guilty plea of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
Carpenter Was On Probation When He Possessed Gun
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II and charging documents filed with the court, Carpenter was under the supervision of West Virginia state probation for his prior convictions in Calhoun County Circuit of malicious assault and drug charges.
During a probationary home visit, Probation Officers found a 16-gauge altered shotgun and ammunition. The gun had the stock and barrel shortened, ultimately making the weapon an illegal sawed-off shotgun. Carpenter knew he was prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm or ammunition because of his prior felony conviction.
U.S. Attorney Ihlenfeld commended the investigative work of the West Virginia State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
