PATERSON, NJ.- Today, December 17, 2024, Tyheem Jones, 40, of Hawthorne, New Jersey, appeared in Passaic County Superior Court and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Joseph A. Portelli to fifteen years in New Jersey State Prison, subject to the No Early Release Act, which will require Jones to serve 85% of his custodial term before becoming eligible for parole.
Jones was found guilty by a Passaic County jury of Aggravated Manslaughter on November 3, 2023, following a Superior Court trial in connection with the 2020 Paterson beating death of an 18-year-old Paterson, New Jersey man.
According To The Prosecutor’s Office
According to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes, during the trial, Passaic County Senior Prosecutor Evan Mongiardo presented evidence that on August 27, 2020, Jones physically assaulted Nicolas Reyes, 18, along with a juvenile and several other unidentified suspects in the area Goodwin Avenue near Auburn Street in the City of Paterson, following a shooting incident that occurred Goodwin Avenue minutes earlier.
The assault was captured on surveillance video, which depicted the entire violent assault that captured Jones punching, kicking, and pistol-whipping Mr. Reyes even as he was lying in the roadway. The assault lasted approximately 11 minutes. Mr. Reyes was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the assault and was pronounced deceased.
A subsequent investigation by Detectives of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department led to Jones being charged with the death of Mr. Reyes.
