BALTIMORE, MD.- On Friday, December 13, 2024, following a two-week trial in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, a Federal Jury found Jalen Thomas Kelley, 22, of Abingdon, Maryland, guilty on federal charges of Aggravated Sexual Abuse; Sexual Abuse; and Assault within the Territorial Jurisdiction, in connection with the rape of a child aboard a Baltimore cruise ship.
According to U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron and evidence presented at trial, between January 1 and January 2, 2023, Kelley forcibly raped and assaulted the victim, who was a minor at the time of the attack, aboard the Carnival Legend Cruise Ship. The cruise ship was scheduled to return to the Baltimore Port on January 2, 2023.
Prosecutor’s Present Testimony For Six Other Alleged Victims
In addition to the victim’s testimony during the trial, the prosecution presented testimony from six additional individuals who alleged Kelley had sexually assaulted them on separate occasions. When sentenced, Kelley faces up to life in federal prison.
“Sexual violence is a horrific violation of personal autonomy and will not be tolerated. We will hold perpetrators accountable,” said U.S. Attorney Barron. “This verdict should send a message to survivors that they are heard, validated, and supported.”
“We will never stop working to serve justice for the victims of predators like Mr. Kelley, no matter where the crime occurs,” said FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge William J. DelBagno. “Today’s conviction reflects the unwavering resolve of the FBI to protect our communities and keep Americans safe.”
