Wichita Man Sentenced For Stealing & Selling Human Remains

SCRANTON, PA.- On Friday, January 3, 2025, Angelo Pereyra, 39, of Wichita, Kansas, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Matthew W. Brann to 18 months in federal prison for his previously entered guilty plea to Interstate Transport of Stolen Human Remains and Body Parts.

According to U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam and charging documents filed with the court, beginning in 2018 and lasting through 2022, Pereyra stole human remains and body parts from a Kansas hospital where he was employed as a pathology assistant and sold them.

Pereyra stole organs and portions of organs, including human hearts, brains, spleens, testicles, intestines, and livers, amputated feet, and toes, and other parts. Some of the specimens he stole came from deceased individuals, others from living patients. The most reprehensible is that Pereyra stole the corpses of miscarried and stillborn fetuses before they could be buried appropriately.

Pereyra Sold Body Parts To Man In Pennsylvania

Pereyra sold the stolen specimens to Andrew Ensanian of Montgomery, Pennsylvania, and shipped the parts to him from Kansas to Pennsylvania through the United States Postal Service. Ensanian previously entered a guilty plea for his role in the crimes and is awaiting sentencing.

These charges are a result of a multi-year investigation into the nationwide trafficking of stolen human remains. Multiple people have been previously charged in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, and five have entered guilty pleas. An additional person had been charged and convicted in Arkansas.
