D.C. Man Sentenced For Shooting At Father & Young Son At Naylor Gardens

WASHINGTON, DC.- On Friday, January 3, 2025, Deon Cannon, 30, of Washington, D.C., appeared in the Superior Court for the District of Columbia and was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Rainey Brandt to 288 months in prison, to be immediately followed by five years of supervised release for his August 2024 conviction on weapons and assault charges.
On August 7, 2024, following a trial, a District of Columbia Superior Court jury found Cannon guilty on the charges of one count of Assault with Intent to Kill While Armed of a Minor; one count of Assault with intent to Kill While Armed; one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon of a Minor; one count of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon; four counts of Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime of Violence; one count of Unlawful Possession of Ammunition; and one count of Carrying a Firearm Without a License.

According to U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves and evidence present at trial on September 5, 2021, at around 5:40 p.m., Cannon paced up and down Terrace Road in the Naylor Gardens neighborhood of Northeast D.C, waiting to cross paths with the victim. When the victim walked from a nearby playground with his 6-year-old son, Cannon opened fire, firing two rounds directly at the victims.
In defense of his 6-year-old son, the father fired back while a second shooter came from around the corner and fired 17 more rounds aimed at the victim. The victim’s son ran away.
