U.S. Border Patrol Agent Killed During Traffic Stop Near Canadian Border

The Vermont Border Patrol Agent who was fatally gunned down by a migrant during a traffic stop yesterday afternoon just south of the Canadian Border has been identified as David C. Maland, 44, a 13-year veteran of the Customs and Border Patrol.
COVENTRY, VT.- The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Vermont State Police confirmed on Monday, January 20, 2025, that a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent was tragically killed in a shooting that occurred just south of the U.S. Canadian Border in Coventry, Vermont, during a traffic stop.
Vermont State Police reported that the deadly encounter occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Route 91 in Coventry, about 20 miles south of the Canadian Border, during a traffic stop. Authorities reported that a suspect was shot and killed, and another suspect was injured in the shooting.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has not released the name of the Border Patrol Agent, but it has been reported that the Agent has been with the Agency for over a dozen years and was assigned to the Agency’s Newport Station. This station is part of the Swanton Sector, which is responsible for patrolling Vermont, parts of New York, and New Hampshire. The Swanton Sector includes 295 miles of the international border with Canada.
