CHARLESTON, W.VA.- On Thursday, January 30, 2025, Jason L. Norman, 42, of Ranger, West Virginia, appeared in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas E. Johnston to 12 months and one day in federal prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release for his previously entered guilty plea of being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Convicted Felon.

According to U.S. Attorney Will Thompson and charging documents filed with the District Court, on March 10, 2023, during an encounter with law enforcement officers, Norman possessed a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 .223-caliber rifle and a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun at his Ranger, West Virginia home.

Federal law prohibits a person with a prior felony conviction from owning or possessing firearms and ammunition. Norman knew when he possessed the rifle and shotgun on March 10, 2023, that he was a prohibited person due to a prior felony conviction for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in Lincoln County Circuit Court in April 2017.

During the investigation of this offense, investigators uncovered that Norman had also possessed a Glock semi-automatic handgun that he sold to another person.
